Pattern: Two-By-Two by It’s Sew Emma
Fabric: ABC XYZ Fat Quarter Bundle by Stacy Lest Hsu
My cousin is expecting a baby boy in April, so I made these adorable “Fraternal” baby quilts — the second is for her two-year-old son.
This pattern, Two-by-Two by It’s Sew Emma, was so fun and quick to make, I’d love to make it again using scraps or fussy-cut novelty fabric.
When I was browsing for fabric, I immediately fell in love with a fat quarter bundle called “ABC XYZ” by Stacy Lest Hsu for Moda Fabrics. The bundle came with thirty-two fat quarters which would be more than enough to make two baby quilts.
This was also my first time working with flannel, which I used for the backing. I pre-washed it TWICE, along with all thirty-two fat quarters.
I’m personally not a fan of pre-washing. What can I say? I’m impatient and just want to get to the sewing! However, it was a necessary evil for this project because quilting cotton and flannel shrink differently in the wash. Not to mention, after washing, I had to press all 32 fat quarters!
In the end, all that prep work was worth it because the flannel makes for a super snuggly quilt!
Other notes:
- For quilting, I used a walking foot, making simple straight lines, 1/4″ away from each seam.
- I procured the grey background fabric from my local fabric store.
- I signed both quilts using a fine Sharpie marker “Made With Love, Cousin Kristin — March 2024”
